Gordon’s Surprise for Alabama Point
From Peggy Lively (Alabama Point Team Leader) – Aug 21st:
Greetings from the Point,
My day started with early patrol. Before I got to the start point, Mary called. She had a crawl and possible nest! I put patrol on hold and got the Turtle Taxi after calling Susie G to alert the team. Sure enough , Mama Turtle had meandered over 300 feet and laid up in the dunes. The eggs were found after a lengthy search. I asked Wendy to please continue with East patrol while I did the nest work. She agreed with a big smile. Mike called and said visitors had reported a crawl East of the State Park . Wendy called very excited, she had a nest near the water just East of the State Park. It took a long time, but eggs were found and moved to higher ground. Susie offered to complete patrol—yes—sure enough, she called and had another crawl! We amassed at the third crawl after I went back for more supplies. By this time it had been a few hours and we were hungry and hot but elated . We cheerfully dug for eggs (two body pits). Mama turtle had crossed over her tracks and we dug a huge area. Coyote tracks were very evident. After an exhausting dig we decided Mama had not laid. Perhaps the Coyote had frightened her. We gave it our best.
Two nests and a false crawl all in one morning.
Thanks to an awesome team. Each of you are special!
What a wonderful thing to live in Paradise.
See you on the Beach,
Turtle Mom
