Gordon’s Surprise for Alabama Point
July 30th: From Peggy Lively (AP Team Lead)
Around eight last night I went to check on I-1. I saw a nose and flipper tips and called Rosie to make the text. The nose and flippers went back in the sand as everyone was arriving. Herman said the baby saw me and went back into the nest. We waited a long time and then went home disappointed. After eleven Carrie called and said a huge ghost crab hole was in the nest. She carefully got the crab and saved the babies!!!!! Yeah Carrie!!!!! All was quiet and we put them to bed.
I went to check the nest a little before four A.M. A dinner plate sized depression had formed and I thought I could see a black nose. I dug a trench and returned to the nest to find two babies waiting. About an hour later three more appeared. The team was texted and the sand started moving. A little after daylight broke on the horizon we had a “boil” . A total of 94 hatchlings were sent out in a gentle surf to the elation of all.
I went home to get the sand out of my ears and grab a cup of coffee. Josh ,the cabana boy, who watched the mama lay and has been watching the nest faithfully called. He saw turtles coming! A total of 25 more hatchlings made their debut! Josh has been so awesome!
The nest is being monitored all day as we still hear some scratching. This is a Kemp’s Ridley nest. Thanks to all who came to help last night and today.
No crawls were found today. Rick, Jackie P., & Richard are on duty tomorrow.
