Dauphin Island Team Updates

Hi Team! I wanted to send out some more updates on our nests, and answers to some common questions I have been receiving. First, the DeSoto nest, J7, has taken another predator hit. Saturday tracks were found around the nest (looking to belong to a largish dog, maybe?) and eggs and shells were found scattered…

I-6 !!!!

Hip-hip hooray!   A little after ten last night Mike called me from Orlando. A visitor had watched a turtle laying on our beach. I hurried out and found the crawl and nest area. No one was around. I called Gale and she alerted the team.  Thanks to Gale, George, Mitch & Rosie for coming…

Birthing babies in Ft Morgan

It has been a fun time in the turtle world on Fort Morgan the last couple of nights. A2 hatched 35 on Friday night with an additional lone baby on Saturday morning. On Saturday night, there was a total of 49, so we expect another 50 or so tonight. A1 had a total of 75 last night.  It was…

Babies – the first of the season

We had a birthing at nest A2 on Fort Morgan at about 5 minutes to midnight. 35 babies are on their way to their next adventure.  A1 has indentions and noise, so it is close. Thanks to all who came out so late.

Fox Predation – Out-Foxing The Red Fox

After heavy predation by a very wily fox, we have a new and improved predator screen on J-9! Volunteer Rich Brewer researched and found the idea, and Mike approved. The nest is still centered under the screen, and we’re hoping the larger coverage area will deter the fox, and others, from any further meals. Check…

Another “birthday” nest and hatching season is getting close

One of our Fort Morgan Mama turtles left a birthday present for one of our morning patrols, Diane. It was a nice nest with 95 eggs.  Congratulations Diane on your birthday present. Hatching season is upon us with both A-1 and A-2 showing signs of activity.   Both of those nests have indentions and are…

Plastic bags

That iconic Wal-Mart plastic bag, or Winn-Dixie, or Publix, or any other retail outlet bag since nobody asks, “Paper or plastic?” anymore, can be seen on the Alabama beaches every summer with increasing frequency.  People carry “stuff” to the beach in them; they use them filled with sand as anchor points for their tents, fishermen…

Wednesday Patrol

Greetings from the Point,    Gale, Beverly & Ellen patrolled today. No new crawls were observed today.   Two gill netting boats were seen close to shore in the pre-dawn hours. They had no running lights but did shine bright spot lights along the shore at various times. Perhaps this is what dis-oriented our last…

Ft Morgan again

We had nest number 37 today. Someone called in a nesting turtle after 10 pm last night. Patrol of Diana B, Tom, Priscilla, Ally found the nest this  morning. It did not have to be moved.  Ally was the lucky egg finder. Diana reported lots of dolphins, a shark, and a osprey with it’s breakfast.…
