Gulf State Park again!
June 12 : From Joe & Denise (GSP team leaders)
Gonna be a quiet Sunday morning or so I thought. Well momma turtle had another way of welcoming me back from vacation. Fran had turned over the reporting and the first call I get is from veteran turtler Hanna Habisreitinger alerting me to a crawl. Denise and I rush down to find Big Mamma’s nest just west of the yellow house and east of G-1. I ran into the Orange Beach patrol on the way to the nest and had them alert their team leader to be sure we were clear on who’s nest it was. I think they were familiar with this turtle from years past from the nest location she chose and the crawl width of 42″. Lisa Graham was gracious in her concession that the nest was in Gulf State Park’s section of the beach. [With] That settled the one call now went out to the team. Sorry Fran for having to call on you to help but appreciate the quick response and getting the message out. As we were well away from the water, we did not have to relocate this nest. Turned out to be a good thing because Big Mamma hid the eggs well. Kim Wade found the eggs after an exhausting search and we completed processing and marking the nest. Hap and Hanna had already left to attend church but we had an able replacement to cheer us on in our search, Hap’s sister, Faye Schultz. Her husband Bill had also gone to church but made it back for the team picture at the end. We had a couple of other visitors, Pam Callahan and Leatha Bates, stop by on their morning walk. The team consisted of Hap n Hanna, Cathy Bell, Bob Parris and Kim Wade and team leaders Denise and Joe Spafford. Special congratulations to Hanna for finding her first nest, she has been at it for a while. She named it Big Mamma’s nest and cautions anyone from thinking that it was named after her! Great job Gulf State Park team!
