Gordon’s Surprise for Alabama Point
Sept 6th: From Peggy Lively (AP Team Leader)
I thought yesterday was adventuresome. Today brought even more exciting happenings!
I went to nest I-4 at around four a.m. It began to “boil” at around four-twenty. To my extreme delight 77 baby turtles emerged in the moonlight. I texted the team that were on the text list. Richard arrived first and said his wife had found 2 hatchlings in their pool at Marlin Key around midnight. Richard spotted one more baby coming out…for a total of 78. I checked all around I-4 and knew none had emerged before the boil. Susie and the Carrols arrived. The trench was dug and we began checking all the area pools. We found more babies!!!!!!!!!!!! It was raining babies. The little turtles were in the parking garages and even in the supply room At Perdido Quay. Were they the hatchlings from the nest that had hatched the night before last ?? (I-8) We saw a total of 104 babies to the water. As we were trying to solve the mystery, I got a call from Lisa. Lynn Tampary had found a hatchling trying to cross the road!!!!! We searched for a possible missed nest up and down the beach and found N O tracks. We dug in ghost crab holes and found no babies. We did find one thatdid not make it at the sand fencing behind Dolphin Key. After a few hours we disbanded. I went home and grabbed some coffee. I went back to the beach and just checked the nests…all was quiet. I checked the condo pools and found a baby playing in the water at Dolphin Key at eleven.
I will keep a close eye on the condos today. We now have 106 to the water since dawn. I got a call a lady put 5 in the water after midnight. What a morning!!!!!!!!!!!!
See you on the beach,
