Gulf State Park gets their first nest of 2019 Season
Aug 24th: From Peggy Lively (AP Team Leader)
Good morning turtle lovers,
I met with Linda and Steve at I-3 for sunset check and a quick training class. We heard awesome sounds and then parted ways after training. I went home to fish. I got a call from Linda just as I was going on the dock. They had three escapees at I-2. I hurried to the jeep and headed there. Upon arrival I discovered Steve and Linda had found one and put him in the water. Steve started trailing number two . Linda and I took out after #3. He had headed to the lights of Phoenix X. We trailed him in and out of the sand fencing. Linda found him almost to the boardwalk and quickly put him in the water. We went to check on Steve and his progress with #2. Oh my! The tracks went over the berm and toward the street and Bella Luna. Could our sweet Paula be doing her turtle whispering?? We lost the tracks in the packed sand and gravel. Being the tenacious turtle people we are—we continued on without tracks for about an hour. Tired, hot and with heavy hearts we decided to give up. Steve headed to his truck to get shoes for Linda who had gotten sand burrs. We heard his yell as he approached the street area—-there was the baby in the tall grass headed to Bella Luna!!!!!!! This was truly a miracle for Steve to find him.. We were tired but the baby (dubbed Stephen Clifford) was very active. We gave him a free ride back to the shoreline and released Stephen Clifford—SUPER TURTLE so he could begin his next adventure.
See you on the beach,
