Gordon’s Surprise for Alabama Point

Laguna Key had their 3rd nest of the season on May 24th. Jan & Ken Taylor submitted this report of that exciting find……..

Congratulations to new team member Wendy Smith for finding 2 false crawls and our third nest this morning.
Interesting fact about the nest…..momma crawled in and nested while it was raining and by the time she crawled out it had quit. See the difference in the tracks right next to each other . I have never seen this before. Her crawl width was 40″. Nest was not moved, so we will just have to wait to find out how many eggs.

The false crawls and nest were within 400 feet of each other. Both False Crawls were 36″ wide. Not able to tell if it was the same turtle or two as one of the crawls was rained on and the other was not. It rained around 2:00 am in this area.
FC#1 – which was the one rained on –came straight out of the water up 67′ to a vegetation cropping did a turn around and headed back to the water over incoming tracks, ran into another vegetation mound, turned right and headed to the water.
FC#2 – which was not rained on — was 100 feet east of FC#1, came shore heading north 35′. meandered 300′ north & west in a snake like manner, crossed over FC#1 tracks, did a ribbon loop and 50′ back to the water.
Great morning. Thanks to all who came to help.
Share The Beach update – “2 more nests this morning for a total of 10. Still too early to tell if this trend will hold. Last year on the 24th we had just 2 nests. In 2015 we had 7 on the 24th.”
See you on the beach soon 🙂
Jan & Ken
