Ft Morgan – And the prize goes to…..
Another late post from yours truly … someday I may actually catch up. This from Haley (Intern at Bon Secour NWR) from June 4th.
Today was the magic day! We found 1 false crawl and 2 nests on the Fort Morgan unit! The first nest was [… clip …] at the very top of a tall dune! That mother certainly got her exercise! We could not find the eggs at first but we came back to check one more time before leaving the unit. Thank you to Allie and Susan for helping Sam and I to locate them!
Further down the unit was a very peculiar false crawl. The turtle seemed to wind her way west down the beach and tried three times to climb the steep little cliff up to the dunes before crawling around some more, giving up and heading back to the ocean. She seems determined to nest so hopefully she will be back!
The second nest was on the wide stretch of beach at the west end of the Fort Morgan unit. The track ended with a huge body pit and it took us awhile before we located the eggs (Pictured). We did find some coyote tracks at this nest but not really any signs of digging. Glad to have that predator screen there now to protect them!
So it looks like the turtles are here and are finally ready to nest! I’m sure you all are just as excited as I am to find some more!
