From Sara Johnson (Dauphin Island Team Leader – August 11:
[Clip…] We finally had a nest hatch! After the disappointment of losing nests 1, 2 and 3 to Tropical Storm Cindy back in June, J-4 pulled through for us and hatched after only 56 days incubation! What can I say, Dauphin Island turtles are adventurous and love being ahead of the curve!
Following protocol, we will excavate this nests tomorrow, late afternoon. We can’t go early in the day, since we need to wait as close to 3 full days past hatching as possible, so we’ll shoot for around 4pm. This nest is accessible to volunteers. To reduce the number of cars entering, and subsequently parking in our very generous volunteer’s driveway (thanks, Mark!!), please try to coordinate carpooling with other volunteers.
We still have 5 nests left that will hatch over the next 5 weeks or so, and are continuing morning patrols for the rest of this month. Let’s keep up the momentum and end the season strong! Hope to see you tomorrow!
