Gulf State Park again!
June 26: From Joe & Denise Spafford (GSP Team Leads)
Hey Team,
Today was a great day for the Gulf State Park turtle team! Veteran turtler, working on 7 years experience, Cade Wittman found his first nest. He managed to bring along his mom, dad and grandmother (Brandi, Frank and Sandy Vines) as well as his cousin Kylie for the find. Wow what a day to celebrate. Cade and his family have patrolled every other Sunday for all those years and haven’t skipped a beat without finding tracks and a nest. It just goes to show the dedication Share The Beach team members have to the sea turtles. Congratulations Cade and family.
The nest was below the high tide line so it had to be moved. The One Call went out and the team started to arrive. Everyone was in the lurch waiting on the GO signal from Team Leader Denise Spafford. Once started the eggs were found pretty quick by Brandi Wittman (Frank had his chance last year). We relocated 92 eggs to the new nest location. All the data was recorded by Co-Team Leaders Fran and Neal Shults. The team did the rest to complete marking and taping off the nest. The team consisted of Carolyn Schupp, Lynn Doerr, Maureen Ashmore, Bob Parris, Debi Jones, and with special mention for traveling from far off on short notice, Alyson and Brooks Newsome, Carol Wilson, and Karon Noll. I can’t forget the Wittman family and the taxi driver, yours truly.
Retraction from last report, Caren Dixon’s son is actually a daughter. Silly me, girls can wear blue if they want to!
Til tomorrow,
Denise and Joe Spafford, GSP Team Leaders
Fran and Neal Shults, GSP Co-Team Leaders
