Last night was a fun night in Orange Beach. Tina and I were on our way in to sit with Norm and Jane @ H-7 when we got the “Turtle Call”. 15 minutes later, we walked up to the nest with our chairs and Norm said, “You won’t need those chairs!” I took a look at the nest and “Holy Cow!” [or something close 😉 ] There’s a huge depression & turtles!” The crowd of excited visitors were soon delighted by an early evening (dusk) boil. An almost perfect boil with 89 hatchlings emerging while there was enough light in the sky for all to get a great look at this miracle. By 8:00 pm all had entered the Gulf to cheers, applause, laughter and a heartfelt “God speed, little ones.” BTW: There’s an inside story, but when I asked Jen, “What time are they going to hatch?” she said, “7:43 pm”. Well, it was 7:43 pm!
And that’s not the end of the story…
It seems that H-11 also had a depression so off we headed with several of the team to Phoenix IV. When we arrived there was a small crowd and the moon was just rising over the Gulf on a clear night. We were all worried that the bright white (not turtle friendly) lights from the Turquoise Place would entice the hatchlings to the west and away from the water. But it would seem that our bright “light in the sky” far out shined even Turquoise and 90 babies entered the water just before 9:00 pm. The waves seemed to be “just right” to help take them out without too much struggle. The crowds at both events were (for the most part) respectful of our requests to stay out of the water and maintain a safe distance from the turtles.
So, what surprises are in store tonight???
