The Gulf State Park Turtle Team had to work hard to get their 2nd nest of the season on May 29th. New team members Carmen Johnson and Steve Brooks found the tracks early, but mama turtle had done a good job of hiding the nest. Steve did credit co-team leader Neal Shults with a good training job. He said Neal was spot on by telling them they would see the tracks well before they got to them. The One Call went out and the team assembled and began to search for the eggs at 7:30 am. Everyone was exhausted by 8:30 and we still had not found the eggs. Mike Reynolds readily answered the call for help but was unable to locate the egg clutch after the nest area was disturbed by the team’s search. We placed a quick marker around the area and suspended the search as it began to rain. After reviewing the initial pictures taken of the nest area, team leaders Denise and Joe Spafford resumed the search after lunch. The eggs were found but the nest could not be relocated due to the late hour. They finished processing and marking the nest. We all were so happy to have our second nest. Team members Debi Jones, Suzanne, Mikayla, and Eva Pendley, Tera Lofty, Cathy Bell, Susanna Lax, Pat Walls, Doug Caudil, and co-team leaders Fran and Neal Shults all helped with this nest. We also had a couple of special guests with us, Nora Malone, Susanna Lax’s granddaughter came along to help. And Denman, a new intern at the Gulf State Park was there to see what Share The Beach is all about. We had lots of visitors stop by to see what we were doing and a family from Fairhope got to see the eggs after they were found. All in all, this is going in the books as a good day with lessons learned – “Be Persistent”. Great job GSP Turtle Team!
