From Peggy Lively – 4 Sep 2018:
With the approaching storm barreling toward shore, I became very concerned for I-5. The hatchlings were working very fast and a huge sinkhole had developed in less than 10 hours. I knew there were many, many already hatched in the nest. I got permission to excavate before mid-afternoon. Team was notified and I thank those who came on such short notice to help. We had sand blowing and rain pelting as we got 90 beautiful babies from the nest. They fought the wind and waddled to the surf (which was not gentle). A few turned North but the majority were eager to begin their journey. We were in total awe . Four hatched before our eyes, as we marveled at the miracle. Jennifer and I put the five unhatched eggs in I-6 ( Gale’s Memorial Nest) which was laid 72 hours after I-5 and located just several feet away. We were like kids again frolicking in the storm on the beach!
We have another beautiful memory to relish.
