The Gulf State Park Turtle Team gets nest number 4 of the season on Saturday June 27th. Congratulations to veteran turtlers Dee Horton, Glenda McCaleb and Pat Walls for finding the tracks and the nest. After an exhausting search, Suzanne Pendley found the eggs and we began relocating the nest. Momma turtle was in a hurry to lay her eggs and nested right in the wrack line. We only had to go a little ways but that gained over a foot of height safety from the tide. We did find an egg that appeared to have two yolks among the 97 we relocated and everyone says they will watch close for the twins when they hatch.
Really! Don’t the hatchlings look alike? Guess we will have to see what happens. We had a great team turnout to assist with the nest and a special thanks to all who helped. Cathy Bell, Doug Caudil, Debi Jones, Susanna Lax, Bob Parris, and Darla Rice plus those already mentioned, joined team leaders Fran and Neal Shults and Denise and Joe Spafford to ‘Get R Done’. Hooray team! We are having a great season so far!
I’d like to share a moment. After the first two nests, Denise said she had enough of this nesting on days she had to work! What do you know now the next two nests come on her days off? She may be doing some special turtle dance while I’m not looking. Got me to thinking, her next day off is Tuesday so I wonder if the next nest will be???? Yea team leader Denise!
Hope to see you on the beach real soon! – Joe
