I have been patrolling with the Ft Morgan Team some this year – Orange Beach is still my team and that will never change – So last Saturday morning (June 10) we headed out on the UTV and headed east a little before 6 am. Debi was driving, Ronnie riding shotgun and Dianna Black and I were in the back seat. We were excited to get started since Debi knew we had a nest. The USGS team is here doing some tagging of nesting turtles for a couple of weeks and they had alerted us of a nest.
We arrived at the nest and saw a nice big crawl with the nesting area marked off for us. The USGS team had left a marker for us indicating where they believed the nest was. While Debi was busy with the official Nesting Data Sheet information Dianna, Ronnie and I started digging. After about 10 minutes we still hadn’t located a viable “soft spot” worth pursuing so we widened our search. There at the edge of the taped off area Ronnie finally located the eggs! Way to go Ronnie! It just shows that even though we may watch a momma turtle lay her eggs, by the time she finishes covering and camouflaging her nest we often are wrong in where we think she laid. They’re good at their job.
Way to go Ft Morgan.
