The Ft Morgan Team has been very busy during the past two weeks. After a slow start the 4 day period of May 23rd thru May 26th provided a total of 7 nests for the Ft Morgan team. That stormy Tuesday the 23rd rained turtles when we had 3 nests discovered that morning. Chan West found 2 of those nests near the east end or our section and Judy Kaiser found another near the west end. That kept us busy for awhile but in the end all 3 nests were marked and protected. The following 2 days produced a nest apiece with Keith & Sue Cole finding our 4th nest and on the 25th Mack & Cynthia Mayo got #5. The next day, May 26th gave us 2 more nests. A-6 was located by the intrepid patrol trio of Clark Fuller, Helen Whitson & Marie Conner. What a great find for their 1st year. Long time veteran Jane Lee found what may be our most interesting nest of the year just a little later. She followed Momma’s crawl up to, over and then back into the stern end of the shipwreck Rachel. Why this momma decided to nest there is anybody’s guess.
We got a little breathing room during the following 8 days. Then yesterday, Jun 4th, the USGS turtle tag team found a nest and Amanda Atkins was the proud recipient of her first nest. Today, June 5th USGS located another nesting turtle and this time first year volunteers Charlie and Ellen Henry were the proud recipients. Our volunteers are racking up a great score. Keep up the great work.
The Bon Secour NWR was skunked during the month of May and that’s really unusual. However the past 2 days, June 4th & 5th provided them with 3 nests total. Now they’re on a roll.
