June 13: From Sara Johnson (DI Team Leader)
Hey Team!!
Hope you’re all having a great start to your week! The turtles continue to keep us on our toes and busy!
This past Friday, we had FOUR false crawls! Two appear to have been the same turtle, but no nest for her was found. Both crawls were very close together […clip…] and were found by Jack and Tracy Upton. Stephanie K found another false crawl near the condos, this one from a different turtle, and the fourth crawl was called in directly to Mike. The turtle came in on the Gulf side near the Katrina Cut, and crawled all the way back to the rocks! She never nested, turned around at the rocks, and crawled back out.
Finally, a nest was called in to Mike out past Katrina Cut. We don’t patrol out that far since there is no human interference to worry about, but we do like to get these called in so we can report them in our number to FWS! And that was all on Friday!
Today, Angie Dixon found a nest a short ways past the west end parking lot, and then a false crawl as well! So what’s the grand tally right now?? Dauphin Island team has a total of 8 nests and 13 false crawls so far for the season! We’re covering a lot of ground and doing great work at finding the turtle activity!! Keep at it, team!!
A few requests, reminders, etc.
Please be sure whenever you find a false crawl, once data has been recorded, completely rub out the tracks. This goes for nests, too. Don’t want to leave tracks for someone to find the next day and think it’s another!
That’s all for now! Thanks again!!
