Gordon’s Surprise for Alabama Point
From Peggy Lively (AP Team Leader) – Aug 17th, 2017:
Around two-twenty this afternoon [8/17] I headed to the beach. I intended to do a quick listen on I-7 and I-8. Grabbed my scope and sunglasses and ran out to the beach. I listened on I-7 for a long time and thought I heard some very light scratching. It was very windy and I was in the dunes. Next stop was I-8, which was tarped yesterday. Thought this would be a quick check– To my amazement there was a sinkhole! OH MY! I walked to the rear of the nest to write date and time in the journal and returned to listen. As I bent to put the scope in the sand at the front of the tarped area—I saw movement. Suddenly a little nose appeared. I called Rosie to alert the team. I sat on the bucket and prepared to stay. I was not leaving!!!!!! Suddenly to my utter astonishment a full -blown boil!!!!!! I had hatchlings coming out everywhere. Pat T came as I was trying to corral them (sea Gulls were overhead).
Maggie came running down the beach and we quickly got the babies to the water. What a sight!!!!!! Yelling at sea gulls and counting babies. Susie came and got in the water chasing and yelling. The hatchlings were very eager, vibrant, large and ready to swim. Three tourists helped keep the sea gulls away while swimming. To our utter amazement 101 babies swam to their next adventure. We gals had huge smiles on our faces and very happy hearts. Thanks Becky, Rick, and George also for coming…sorry you missed the swim out. OK, Team, get ready our next adventure may be at any time!
Happy Turtle Mom
