Ft Morgan – And the prize goes to…..
A-41 was an exciting nest. Got the call from Mike that we had a turtle on the beach about 9:30 pm (7/26). Put in a call to Vicki Clark and there she was. She had a good audience but I think they must have gotten instructions from Mike because they were all keeping a respectable distance.
We got to see her lay her eggs and got numbers off her flipper tags. Her GPS tracker had barnacles on it so we were not able to get any information off it. Hopefully they can tell us who she is and where she has been from the flipper tags. She laid right at the water edge so we had to do a night time move. Tracks would not have been visible this morning. You would think that seeing her lay her eggs would make them easy to find, but she turned around and walked back over the nest on her way out. We moved 124 beautiful (fresh) eggs to safety.
UPDATE!
We recieved confirmation that the mama turtle who nested here last night was SOPHIA! She nested here in 2013 and then again this year on June 2nd. She left us 141 eggs then and 124 eggs last night. In the time in between she nested in Cape San Blas, Florida. In the years between visits here, she was in Mexico. I guess she likes our Fort Morgan beaches. AND, we tarped he first nest here last night on day 55.
I love the fact that USGS can provide us with this information.
