Tomorrow, May 1st 2015 marks the official start of the Sea Turtle Nesting Season on the Alabama coast. Dozens of dedicated volunteers will take to the beach before sunrise searching the sands of Orange Beach, Gulf Shores, Ft Morgan and Dauphin Island for signs of mother sea turtles that may have come ashore to lay their nests.
These volunteers will be looking for the tell-tale drag and flipper marks left by the 200 – 300 lb sea turtles. During the early days of the nesting season there are few barriers to their nesting attempts. However, later in the season, when the summer visitors flock to the Gulf Coast the toys, tents, chairs and blankets they bring with them can deter these ancient reptiles from succeeding in creating a successful nest.
Please read the “Be Sea Turtle Friendly” tips under the “How You Can Help” heading and maybe you will be lucky enough to see a nesting sea turtle or the emergence of the hatchlings as they make their way back to the Gulf waters. Thank you and here’s hoping for a great season.
