Ft Morgan and the Bon Secur Wildlife Refuge continue to rack up an incredible number of sea turtle nests this season. During the past 14 days (June 2nd – June 15th) there have only been 2 days where no nests were located. During an incredible 6 consecutive days there were 8 new nests discovered.
The dedicated Ft Morgan team has been aided for the past couple of weeks by Dr. Kristen Hart from the USGS and her team of researchers. They were here again this year tagging new nesting female turtles in an effort to better understand their habits.
The Ft Morgan team will certainly be needing help a couple of months from now when these eggs hatch and the hatchlings make their run for the safety of the Gulf of Mexico.
I love keeping track of this blog! I was able to experience a hatching 2 years ago in October. I still use the data from that nest (and website that year) in my 7th grade math class. It is great for my landlocked students to get a chance to develop an attachment for the turtles. (I am hoping for a late nest again so I can potentially experience it again this October on my annual trip to Ft. Morgan.)Thank you for all of your work to protect these amazing animals!
